A student has died after being hit by an unmarked police car.
West Midlands Police said the 24-year-old man from China was hit by a black BMW in the Newtown area of Birmingham at around 7pm yesterday.
He sustained serious head and back injuries in the collision and died in hospital shortly before 1.45pm today.
A police spokesman said the force car was being driven by a uniformed officer and was responding to reports of a stolen vehicle in Aston. It was not involved in a pursuit.
The victim has not been named but police said he was studying for an MSc in data networks and security at Birmingham City University. He was living with friends in the Newtown area.
His family has been informed and his parents are flying over to the UK, where they will be met by officers from West Midlands Police.
A force spokesman said specially trained family liaison officers would be supporting the man's parents, working closely with interpreters and the Chinese Embassy.
The incident has been referred to the IPCC and the officer at the wheel of the police car has been suspended from driving police vehicles.
The West Midlands Police spokesman said the driver "remains active as a police officer" and stressed they had received the training required to drive police vehicles at speed on public roads.
Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe said: "This was a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life after being struck by an unmarked police car as he crossed the road.
"I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the man's family and friends during this very difficult time.
"I would like to assure them and the community, that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to establish the precise circumstances of the collision.
"The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission who are currently considering whether to independently investigate the incident."
Pro Vice-Chancellor Sally Westney, at Birmingham City University, said: "This has come as a huge shock to the faculty and the University.
"We would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to parents, family and friends."
