A man wanted in Italy on suspicion of murdering a police officer 30 years ago has been arrested after being spotted queuing up in a London post office, police said.
Gianfranco Techegne, 49, has been wanted by the Italian authorities since 1982 over the armed robbery of a car hire agency in Naples where the police officer was shot.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said he was detained on Tuesday after being seen in a post office opposite Scotland Yard.
He said: "Acting on intelligence, detectives from the MPS Extradition Unit spotted Gianfranco Techegne, casually queuing up in the post office in Broadway, SW1."
Officers had received a European Arrest Warrant from Italian authorities last month, he added.
Techegne, of Old Pye Street, Westminster, was also wanted on suspicion of armed robbery and possession of firearms.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he was remanded in custody.
