John Terry's participation for England at the European Championship is "in danger", as new manager Roy Hodgson muses over whether to select him alongside Rio Ferdinand.
Terry goes on trial on 9 July over allegations of allegedly racially abusing Rio's brother Anton in October, and The Daily Mail claim Hodgson believes it will be difficult to take the pair to Ukraine and Poland.
Aside from his trial in two months' time, the Chelsea captain has also endured arguably the worst season of his professional career on the pitch.
His form at the heart of the Blues defence suffered under Andre Villas-Boas and Chelsea have not conceded as many goals in the Premier League since the 2000/01 campaign.
In the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona two weeks ago he was sent off for violent conduct after kneeing Alexis Sanchez in the back, ruling him out of Chelsea's Munich final a week on Saturday.
And on Tuesday night Terry endured a torrid time against Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll as Liverpool thrashed their FA Cup conquerors 4-1 at Anfield. The former England captain was culpable for at least two of the home side's goals.
There is also the 31-year-old's past transgressions to take into account. Ahead of the 2010 World Cup he was stripped of the captaincy over allegations of an affair with ex-club team-mate Wayne Bridge.
Bridge subsequently retired from international duty as Fabio Capello handed the armband over to Ferdinand. Terry was still selected for the South Africa-hosted tournament.
The 65-year-old Italian resigned from the Three Lions post on 8 February this year after the Football Association took the decision of stripping Terry of the captaincy for a second time, after the Crown Prosecution Service delayed his trial until after Euro 2012.
Chelsea made an appeal to Westminster Magistrates' Court to push the date back in order for the three-time Premier League winner to concentrate on his football.
In between him losing the captaincy twice in two years, he was reappointed leader of the national side by Capello in 2011, as Ferdinand struggled with injuries.
Since making his debut against Serbia & Montenegro in 2003, Terry has won 72 caps for England under three coaches, scoring six times. He was made captain on a full-time basis by Steve McClaren in 2006.
The 2004/05 PFA Player of the Year last played in the 1-0 friendly win over Sweden in November.
