British Empire Medal Awarded To 'Big Society' Volunteers

British Empire Medal Awarded To 'Big Society' Volunteers

A medal known as the 'working class gong' that was scrapped in 1992 has been revived and awarded to 'ordinary' people across the country today, in recognition of their work towards building David Cameron's 'Big Society'.

A 62-year-old road sweeper from South London is among those receiving the revived British Empire Medal (BME), in recognition of charity and volunteer work.

Anthony Cleland said he is "very proud" to been granted the reward for services to his community after 25 years cleaning the streets of Lambeth.

"My children are over the moon about it and my colleagues think it's great that a road sweeper is being honoured," he said.

Other recipients of the the BME are Patricia Carter, a waitress from Staffordshire, Gloria Maden, a netball coach from Suffolk and Philip Barnett the director of the Kidz R Us theater company in St. Ives.

Also receiving an BME for services to the community is the appropriately named Peter Boast from Chertsey.

The British Empire Medal has been given to those engaging in voluntary work who have made a "hands-on" contribution to their local community or have made an impact in a relatively short time of three to four years.

Created in 1922, it was traditionally given to civilians below professional level in their jobs or to non-commissioned officers in the armed forces.

Unlike knighthoods or other honours which are handed out personally by the Queen, the BME is awarded by lord lieutenants across the country.

It was scrapped by the last Conservative prime minister, John Major, in 1992, because he felt the distinction between two two types of awards re-enforced the class system.

He wanted to see more 'ordinary' people receive their honours from the Queen herself.

Cameron's flagship 'Big Society' plan to foster a culture of volunteerism has been frequently criticised for being unclear and not sustainable at a time of public spending cuts.

However in bringing back the medal, the prime minster said not enough people were rewarded with MBEs or OBEs for charity and volunteer work they did.

"The medal will be handed out in recognition of the dedication and hard work so many provide to their communities," he said.

The latest round of honours has also raised questions about how appropriate it is to inclusion of the word 'empire' in the titles, given that Britain no longer has one.
