Martha Payne's JustGiving Page Rockets Past £20,000 In Support Of NeverSeconds Girl's Charity

Martha Payne's JustGiving Page Rockets Past £20,000 Mark

Martha Payne's fund to help Mary's Meals, a charity that feeds children around the world, has received more than£20,000 in donations after members of the public rushed to support the nine-year-old.

The schoolgirl's JustGiving page received thousands of donations after Argyll and Bute council told Martha she would have to stop posting pictures of her meals because she was "mis-representing the options" of school lunches.

The council has now lifted the ban following a public outcry, with council leader Roddy McCuish telling BBC Radio 4's World at One: "I have just instructed senior officials to withdraw the ban on photos from the school dining hall.

"It is a good thing to do, to change your mind and I have certainly done that."

Martha's final forlorn farewell post on her NeverSeconds blog on Thursday said:

"This morning in maths I got taken out of class by my head teacher and taken to her office. I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners because of a headline in a newspaper today.

I only write my blog not newspapers and I am sad I am no longer allowed to take photos. I will miss sharing and rating my school dinners and I’ll miss seeing the dinners you send me too. I don’t think I will be able to finish raising enough money for a kitchen for Mary’s Meals either.

Goodbye,

VEG"

Martha explains her reasons for her charity on her JustGiving page, saying that although she and her friends had made felt soaps and candle holders for the charity Mary's Meals, "because I can't make enough felt soaps it is best if you support Mary's Meals directly.

"My blog is being read all over the world and some people have said I am very lucky to have lunch at all. They are right." she adds.

Martha had been uploading images of her "shocking" school dinners onto her blog NeverSeconds and rating them out of 10.

Every post included a picture of the meal and a ratings list, including "number of mouthfuls", "health rating" and "pieces of hair". The schoolgirl's blog became an internet hit and racked up more than two million hits in just a matter of weeks.

Martha Payne's NeverSeconds blog became an internet sensation

"

A Mary's Meals spokesman said Martha has raised enough money to build a kitchen in Malawi.

"Martha's support for Mary's Meals has been amazing and we are extremely grateful for everything that she has done to help us reach some of the hungriest children in the world," he said.

"We are overwhelmed by the huge response to her efforts today, which has led to so many more people donating to her online donation page. Thanks to this fantastic support, Martha has now raised enough money to build a kitchen in Malawi for children receiving Mary's Meals as part of our Sponsor A School initiative and has broken the record for hitting a Sponsor A School online fundraising target in the quickest amount of time.

"Lirangwe Primary School in Blantyre, Malawi, which has 1,963 pupils, will soon have a brand-new kitchen shelter thanks to Martha and her supporters and, if donations continue at the current rate, it will not be long before a year's feeding costs for all of the Lirangwe children are covered too."

By lunchtime the story was one of the most-talked about topics on Twitter and the blog has attracted more than 2.5 million page views.

Neil Bibby, Scottish Labour's spokesman for children and young people, said: "What this pupil has done is fantastic. I am sure her teachers, friends and parents must be incredibly proud of her getting so many readers on her blog from across the world.

"I think she could teach the local council a thing or two about public relations. It looks like someone has totally lost their sense of perspective. The missing ingredient is common sense."
