Dylan Cecil: Coroner Confirms Boy, 4, Drowned After Falling From Jetty

Coroner Confirms Dylan Cecil's Death By Drowning

A coroner has confirmed that Dylan Cecil, the four-year-old boy who slipped from a jetty on last Sunday, died as a result of drowning on Tuesday.

Dylan Cecil was on holiday visiting his grandparents when he fell into the water at Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset on Sunday 19 August. He was said to have been trying to get a closer look at the sea when the incident happened.

His parents, Rachel McCollum and Darren Cecil, attempted to save their boy, while emergency services quickly launched a search and rescue operation.

His body was found by a member of the public four days later - and less than half a mile away from where he was last seen - at a nearby sailing club.

More than 400 people joined the boy's parents at St Andrew's Church in Burnham-on-Sea to remember Dylan during a memorial service on Sunday, while a minute's silence was also held for people to pay their respects near to where Dylan was last seen alive.

Coroner Michael Rose today said a post-mortem examination showed Dylan drowned.

He offered his sympathy to the family, adding: "There can be nothing more harrowing for any parent than to witness the death of a child.

"But I hope his parents will take comfort from the fact that their grief is shared by all in the county, especially those in Burnham-on-Sea and all the emergency services."

No members of Dylan's family were present at the short hearing when his inquest was opened in Taunton. It was adjourned until a date yet to be set.
