Three Charged With Liverpool City Centre Murder

Three men appeared in court on Tuesday charged with the murder of a man during an alleged assault the street.

Stuart Smith, 33, from London, died during the early hours of Sunday morning following the incident in Liverpool city centre.

Emergency crews were called to Back Colquitt Street at about 2.45am following reports that Mr Smith had been assaulted. He was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital where he died a short time later.

A post-mortem examination by a Home Office pathologist is due to establish the cause of death.

Joseph Walker, 27, Mark McEwen, 39, and Michael Samuels, 39, were charged with Mr Smith's murder overnight.

They were arrested at Anfield Stadium during Liverpool FC's match against Arsenal on Sunday.

Walker, of Tintail Way, Middlesex, McEwen, of Angel Park Gardens, Brixton, south London, and Samuels, of St James's Road, Croydon, appeared separately at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday morning.

They spoke only to confirm their names, addresses, and dates of birth.

District Judge Nicholas Sanders told each of them they had been charged with murder and the case was to be sent to Liverpool Crown Court for a bail hearing on Thursday.

The three men will also appear before the Crown Court on September 18 for a preliminary hearing.
