The family of 23-year-old murdered police officer Nicola Hughes have paid tribute to their "beautiful child", who died doing a job she "loved."
A day after the death of Nicola, who is thought to have been ambushed in a gun and grenade attack by fugitive Dale Cregan in Tameside, Greater Manchester, they said she was "always happy."
She died alongside 32-year-old Pc Fiona Bone, as they responded to what is thought to be a hoax 999 call about a burglary.
"She was always happy with life and lived for her family," her family said.
Thirty-two-year-old Fiona Bone and 23-year-old Nicola Hughes were killed after they responded to reports of a burglary
"She had an infectious personality and sense of humour and was a very caring and loving girl. When she left the house this morning she was going to the job she loved.
"Nicola always wanted to make a difference and, in doing so, she made such a big difference to everyone she knew. She cared about everyone and especially her colleagues.
"Nicola was only 23 years old and had the whole of her life in front of her.
"We cannot express how we feel today except to say we have always been exceedingly proud of Nicola and always will be. She knew she was loved by us all and we shall all miss her dreadfully."
She leaves behind her mother, Susan, who she lived with, father Bryn, and younger brother Sam.
On Tuesday Greater Manchester Police Chief constable Sir Peter Fahy described Ms Hughes as a "chatterbox" and a "great bobby" who was "always smiling".
