April Jones Missing: Joanna Yeates' Landlord Chris Jeffries Raises Concerns Over Case

'Suspects Should Have Personal Details Kept Private'

Retired teacher Chris Jefferies who was wrongly arrested over the killing of Joanna Yeates has raised concerns after police released a picture of the man held in the April Jones abduction inquiry.

Joanna Yeates' landlord Jefferies was awarded "substantial" libel damages from eight newspapers last year after a series of allegations were made against him over the Bristol murders.

On Wednesday he suggested personal details should be "kept private" if a suspect has not been charged.

Chris Jefferies' lawyer said that the retired school teacher "was the latest victim of the regular witch hunts and character assassination conducted by the worst elements of the British tabloid media."

Mr Jefferies said the decision by several national newspapers to publish Mark Bridger's photograph on their front pages was "absolutely" what had happened in his case.

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed Mr Bridger's identity on Wednesday and released their own picture to end speculation, but stressed that he was just one of several lines of inquiry.

Mr Jefferies was speaking out after a meeting with Labour leader Ed Miliband as part of the Hacked Off campaign for press reform.

He said: "It should be standard practice that until somebody has been charged with an offence they have their personal details kept private."

Five-year-old April was abducted from the mid-Wales town of Machynlleth at around 7pm on Monday.
