Police caused a splash at a leisure centre in Dorset after two officers jumped into the pool fully-clothed to restrain a "nuisance" swimmer.

As other swimmers at the Littledown Leisure Centre continued doing lengths, two policeman entered the pool and dragged the man to the side using a float.

The incident was filmed from the side of the pool. Other swimmers appear to ignore the officers

According to Dorset Police, the swimmer the turned aggressive and had to be handcuffed and his legs restrained.

However the 50-year-man was later driven home and released without charge, as Dorset Police determined the man had committed no offence, reported the Bournemouth Echo.

As many as eight police officers and four police cars arrived at the family pool according to one witness, who described the operation as "farcical." The incident was filmed from the sidelines and has attracted hundreds of views after being uploaded onto YouTube.

A statement from Chris Weeks of Dorset Police said: “There were concerns for members of the public as this incident was taking place in a public swimming pool.

“The officers in attendance were faced with a potentially high-risk environment to work in where positive action was essential to prevent a breach of the peace.

“When the officers tried to remove the man from the pool, he was very aggressive.

"On removing the man from the pool he had to be handcuffed to the front. He tried to kick out with his legs requiring the officers to apply limb restraints. The officers acted appropriately at all times using Home Office approved methods and equipment.”
