Brighton caused an upset in the third round of the FA cup, beating Premiership Newcastle 2-0 at the Amex Stadium in Sussex.
Traditionally a day for giant killing, Cardiff, currently top of the Championship, were humbled by lowly Macclesfield 2-1 thanks to two late strikes by Matthew Barnes-Homer.
Non-league Luton also caused a shock beating Wolves 1-0 to earn a place in the fourth round.
Elsewhere, Manchester City beat Watford 3-0, Villa progressed past Ipswich 2-1, Middlesbrough thumped Hastings 4-1, and Chelsea put five past Southampton to ease through 5-1.
