A woman has died and her daughter is critically ill in hospital after they were found injured at a hotel.
A guest at the Premier Inn in Greenock, Inverclyde, discovered 23-year-old Nicola McDonough in a hallway. Her mother Margaret, 52, was found in a nearby room at around 7am today.
Mrs McDonough died from her injuries at Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Her daughter is still being treated and her condition is described as critical.
Police are trying to piece together the last movements of the women, who are from Paisley, Renfrewshire.
Their red Suzuki Swift car has been taken from the car park of the hotel, in James Watt Way.
Detective Inspector David Wagstaff from Police Scotland said: "We know that both women were in the Paisley area around 9am on Thursday May 9. However, we are trying to establish their movements from that time until 7am when they were found with serious injuries within a room in the hotel.
"We are unable at this time to establish whether there are any suspicious circumstances.
"I would appeal to anyone who saw these two women in their vehicle to come forward to police.
"We have been unable as yet to speak to Margaret's daughter due to her ill health, and I really need anyone who can help us put together their last known movements to come forward due to the seriousness of the incident."
