Pope Francis paid a Christmas call on his predecessor Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI at his home in the Vatican.
Pictures released by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, show the inside of Pope Emeritus Benedict's retirement home for the first time.
The two popes prayed together in the residence's adjoining chapel, video showed.
The resignation of Pope Benedict earlier this year, due to ill health, was the first in 600 years.
The two have met only once officially since Pope Francis was chosen, at an ceremony in July.
The Telegraph reported that they have, however, corresponded by phone and letter.
