In a rather gruesome turn of events, police were forced to closed a Metrolink station in south Manchester after a horrified commuter came across a pool of blood.

Officers were called to Withington tram stop at 8.30pm last night after a commuter saw dark red liquid in a lift on Princess Parkway, the Manchester Evening News reports.

A forensics team confirmed the liquid was blood, sparking a police investigation.

CCTV footage later showed what appeared to be a man had walking through the area holding bags with fluid dripping from it.

The tram stop was closed as experts worked to establish whether the blood was human or animal.

A force spokesman told the BBC they traced a man who suffered a burst blood vessel in his leg.
