The event commemorates the birth of Lord Rama, believed to be the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Often a rath yatra takes place, involving the transportation of deities on brightly coloured chariots.
The chariots are usually accompanied by crowds of devotees wearing colourful costumes and chanting praises.
