What Does Your Breakfast Say About You? Study Suggests Toast Habits Reveal Personality

What Does Your Breakfast Say About You?

If you spread butter to the edge of your toast you're a perfectionist. If you eat a different breakfast every day you crave excitement.

That's according to a new study which claims our choice of breakfast reveals something about our personality.

Based on toast eating, academics were able to identify 15 personality types including achiever, lover, perfectionist and thrill seeker.

They found that a person who seems to be "on trend" eats 50/50 bread whereas achievers eat hot white toast with the crusts on and dip their butter knife in the jam.

If you cut the crusts off you are intolerant of things going wrong. If you try out exotic jams you crave new experiences.

The study was commissioned by Roberts Bakery together with marmalade makers Duerr's.

They have since created an online tool that you can use to test your personality type. Simply enter the details of how you like your toast, including bread type, thickness and topping, and find out where you sit on the scale.

The full list of 15 personality types, based on toast eating are:

• Angelic

• On trend

• Thrill seeker

• YOLO (you only live once)

• Perfectionist

• Protector

• Tribal chief

• Achiever

• Playful

• Rebellious

• Status Quo lover

• Peacekeeper

• Indulgent

• Easy going

• The one everyone wants as a mate

The tool was developed by Senior Psychology Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, Dr Sandi Mann, by analysing possible subconscious motives that prompt even the simplest of choices.

“How we eat our toast and marmalade might seem intuitive, but the fact is we each individually make a series of choices at breakfast – based on learnt preferences, innate behaviour and conditioned learning – which could underscore your personality type,” Dr Mann said.

Dr Mann is not the first person to suggest breakfast choice reveals something about personality. Others have said a person's first meal of the day can reveal something about the sex they had last night while the team at The Huffington Post have their own theories about what a breakfast pastry says about a person.

So next time you see a colleague eating toast in the office, have a sneaky look at how they've buttered their bread - it night just tell you something.
