Historian and supposed authority on Islam, David Starkey, managed to tickle the depths of racial stereotyping on Question Time by calling Mehdi Hasan 'Ahmed'.
While speaking on the topic of freedom of speech in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo shootings, Starkey gave an abridged account of why he thinks modern Islam is "backward".
Unfortunately he appeared to draw his terms of address from the 1930s and addressed the political director of the Huffington Post UK like this...
Oh dear David.
Needless to say Twitter was all over it.
So confusing that David Starkey is a professor of history, presumably at the same university where Sauron is Professor of Ethics #bbcqt— David Schneider (@davidschneider) January 15, 2015

Mehdi Hasan : 'my name is Mehdi not Ahmed' slams David Starkey who will go down in history as an idiot. Except in his own books. #bbcqt— Occupy London (@OccupyLondon) January 15, 2015
Time to stop giving David Starkey a platform. Addressing Mehdi Hasan as Ahmed is not on, on or off national television. #bbcqt— Ryan Love (@RyanJL) January 15, 2015

Only men like David Starkey with in depth knowledge of Islam would know that every Muslim's second name is Ahmed. #BBCQT— Junaid (@Its_JunaidS) January 15, 2015
