Five people have been arrested, including a 13-year-old girl, on suspicion of a man's murder, Essex Police have said.
Darren Kelly, 42, from Voysey Gardens, Basildon, died from multiple stab wounds and blood loss on Tuesday night.
According to the Mirror, Kelly staggered to a nearby block of of flat before pressing the buzzers and pleading: " “Help me, I’ve been stabbed”.
But despite the efforts of two women, followed by paramedics, he later died at Basildon Hospital.
The others arrested are a 16-year-old boy from Basildon, as well as a 20-year-old man, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy all from Pitsea.
All remain in police custody.
Det Chief Insp Simon Werrett of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: "I would appeal for anyone who saw the attack to contact my team. This happened in a residential area so people would have been about. If you knows who is responsible please contact me or you can give information anonymously to Crimestoppers."
