This is the horrifying moment a man wearing a surgical mask stalked a teenager before slashing her face and throat with a boxcutter.
The 16-year-old victim was walking to school, close to 147th Street and 13th Avenue in Whitestone, Queens, at 8.16am on Wednesday, when her attacker slashed her twice on the face. One strike cut her from the ear to the middle of her throat.
The attack was caught on a neighbour's CCTV camera and shows the teenager making her eight-minute walk to school as her masked attacker, whose identity was hidden under a hoodie, runs up behind her.
Police said it did not appear that the girl knew her attacker.
After slashing the Chinese exchange student, who moved in New York eight months ago, the man fled the scene, leaving a Stanley knife behind.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told WABC that the teenager's attacker "came out of nowhere".
He added: “Once he slashed her, he ran off. … It’s very disturbing."
The teenager was said to have stumbled home drenched in blood, before being taken to hospital where she is in a stable condition. The girl underwent surgery to repair gashes to her neck and cheek, police said.
