CES 2015: The Ultimate Gadget List

The Best At CES 2015
|

CES 2015 is now over. With journalists and tech companies alike now escaping the Nevada desert all that remains is for us to look back at some of the best gadgets that stole the show.

From Sony's insanely thin 4K television to the electric skateboard that promised to fulfil our childhood dreams.

Or perhaps you were more interested in the trends at CES that included curved smartphones and cyber security.

Finally of course there were smart watches, and while new products were few and far between, the car companies nearly stole the show by using them to control their cars.

CES 2015: The Ultimate List
3D Rudder(01 of14)
Open Image Modal
This is the 3D Rudder, and while it may look like a large robot vacuum you actually couldn't be further from the truth. With a dome on the underside it's a giant balancing ball that turns your body into a living games controller. Lean forward and you'll walk forward in-game, lean back and well, you get the idea. Designed for Oculus Rift, the 3D Rudder is certainly something new, even if it'll cause a fair few bruised heads.
HP Zvr Virtual Reality Display(02 of14)
Open Image Modal
HP's Virtual Reality Display is the closest thing you'll get to a science fiction film thus far. A large Full-HD 3D display is then combined with four motion-tracking cameras at the top. What results is a display that'll let you physically interact with the 3D objects that you see on the screen letting you rotate, enlarge and edit. If it works as well as we hope it could redefine how designers work. Shame one of them couldn't work on the design of the display itself.
Parrot Pot(03 of14)
Open Image Modal
For those of you, like us, who couldn't be further from green-fingered if we tried the Parrot Pot is a lifesaver. It removes all responsibility of actually keeping the plant alive and instead just provides you with a nice shiny app that you can occasionally tap, thus entrenching your belief that actually, you're somehow gifting the plant with life. You're not, the pot is, with it's in built hydration system and array of smart sensors.
Parrot Zik Sport(04 of14)
Open Image Modal
Parrot hasn't been sitting on its laurels, not even slightly. Next up are the Parrot Zik Sport headphones. They look slightly odd. With strange cushioning pads just above the ears Parrot claims that this very definitely unique design means they won't fall out while also remaining comfy. We'll be trying that before we take their word for it. The good news is these tiny headphones retain all of the Zik's incredible noise-cancelling tech while adding the ability to track your runs and measure your heart-rate.
Belty(05 of14)
Open Image Modal
It's hard to describe Belty as anything other than a gadget you definitely don't need. That said, there are plenty of gadgets you don't need in life but that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy them. Belty is the smart belt buckle that'll loosen when you've eaten too much. That's right, this buckle will quietly and discretely do what half the nation does after eating a Sunday Roast. We see some potential issues, the most prominent of which being how noisy it is, but rest assured we'll try them out and let you know.
ZBoard 2 Electric Skateboard(06 of14)
Open Image Modal
When rocket skates simply aren't enough, the intrepid new adopter should turn to this: The ZBoard 2. This ultra-hip electric skateboard is comprised of a machined wooden board, two sensing pads which detect your weight distribution and a powerful motor underneath that'll propel you to 20mph over a range of 16 miles. This company is so hip there's a 'San Francisco' model for taking on those steep hills. At least they know their market.
The Mint(07 of14)
Open Image Modal
There's no subtle way of saying this. It's a gadget that tells you if you have bad breath. Not in a vindictive way, but in a way that helps you stay hydrated and helpfully keeps your body healthy while gently reminding you that sometimes, you can have too much coffee. The Mint connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and can give you daily readouts of your overall hydration health.
Volvo Connected Bike Helmet(08 of14)
Open Image Modal
Volvo seems to be doing more for the average cyclist than most cycling companies, and its to be commended for it. This latest innovation is the Connected Bike Helmet. Made in conjunction with cycling specialists POC, the helmet contains GPS and GPRS and can communicate with any enabled car, giving the driver an audible and visual warning if it's about to crash into the bike. This goes two ways because cyclists can be just as bad so if a cyclist can't see the car they'll get a warning as well.
Mad Catz L.Y.N.X. 9(09 of14)
Open Image Modal
This spider-like contraption is the Mad Catz L.Y.N.X. 9 gaming controller. It looks like the spawn of a Transformer and it costs £200. This then is a gadget for the truly devoted. The devoted are justly rewarded however with a controller that can change its shape to fit smartphones and tablets. It'll change its shape to look like a classic console controller or (as you can see here) as a newer style PS4 controller. If gaming on the go is your thing, this might be the gadget to make you ditch your DS. Might be...
BMW Touch Command(10 of14)
Open Image Modal
Don't let the heavily stylised picture fool you, this is full on James Bond stuff. BMW's new 'Touch Command' feature turns a Samsung tablet into a fully-fledged remote control for its future car. Stopping short of being able to actually drive it as you would in 'Tomorrow Never Dies', the tablet will let you control just about everything else from the AC to the way the chairs gently massage your spinal column.
Sony Attach(11 of14)
Open Image Modal
In the absence of Google actually releasing an update to Google Glass, the competition has begun its fight back. The latest comes courtesy of Sony with the Attach. Rather than the full-fat smart-glasses experience, Attach is a way to upgrade your existing specs. Simply attach it (see what they did there), and you've got a pair of smart glasses. Attach uses a tiny OLED prism display which shows Sony's own software. Sadly it's hard to get too excited as not even Google's entirely sure what smart glasses should be for yet.
SMS Audio Star Wars(12 of14)
Open Image Modal
50 Cent is nothing if not a shrewd businessman. Riding off the back of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the music star's headphone company has handily expanded its range of Star Wars headphones. The depressing fact is that beneath that happy-go-lucky exterior actually beats the heart of a good pair of headphones. With 40mm drivers and passive noise-cancelling you'll be in your own Galaxy.
Energous WattUp(13 of14)
Open Image Modal
This is science fiction become fact. The Energous WattUp is a box that'll power your gadgets, wirelessly. Not just wirelessly but up to 20 feet away. Imagine buying a new TV and then never having to plug it in. How does it work? Well it uses the same technology as WiFi. Once it has found a compatible device using Bluetooth, it'll connect over WiFi and start sending highly focused RF signals to the smartphone. A tiny chip in the phone then converts the WiFi into actual power. Ridiculous, but true.
LG Flex 2.0(14 of14)
Open Image Modal
Last but not least is LG's continued determination to make sure we're all looking at Facebook through a curved screen. The G Flex 2.0 is -- as you've probably guessed -- the second incarnation of its experimental curved screen smartphone that you can actually buy. There's good news, it looks like it might actually be really good. With a manageable 5.5-inch Full-HD display, the G Flex 2.0 is thinner, more powerful. While we weren't sure about Samsung's 'mood fish' Galaxy Round, the Flex 2.0 could be the exception.
