A new pill promises to eradicate all the symptoms of a hangover in just 15 minutes.

The 'Blowfish' hangover pill claims it can wipe out the headaches, fatigue and nausea that follow a heavy night on the tiles with its potent formula of 500 milligrams of aspirin, caffeine and antacid.

With its 'Own the night, save the day' mantra, the £1.90 pill claims to "restore mental alertness or wakefulness when experiencing fatigue or drowsiness associated with a hangover".

The tablet is the brainchild of an ex-financier with no pharmaceutical background. Brenna Haysom discovered the winning formula after trying countless hangover cures over the years.

"I started on a quest to find something that really worked and could be taken the morning after drinking. After some research, I found a combination that did the trick, fast. I started sharing it with my friends, and they kept asking for more," says Haysom.

Joining forces with medication manufacturers, Rally Labs LLC, the hangover pill has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is now readily available to buy in the US and will hit the UK next year. The pill costs £7.60 for a pack of six.

In the meantime, here's the NHS guide to avoiding a hangover to see you through the festive season.

1. Don't drink on an empty stomach. Before you go out, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help slow down the body's absorption of alcohol.

2. Don't drink dark-coloured drinks if you've found that you're sensitive to them. They contain natural chemicals called congeners (impurities), which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse.

3. Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic drink. Carbonated (fizzy) drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your system.

4. Drink a pint or so of water before you go to sleep. Keep a glass of water by the bed to sip if you wake up during the night.
