Jade Jagger Hid Her Pregnancy For As Long As Possible As She Feared Being Labelled A 'Geriatric Mum'

Jade Jagger Opens Up About Becoming A Grandmother And A Mum Again - At The Same Time
|

Mum of three Jade Jagger talks candidly to Tess Daly about motherhood, revealing that becoming a young mum didn't change her life, "it just became my life."

Discussing the birth of her eldest daughter Assisi when Jade was just 20, the jeweller and interior designer explains:

"It was a bit of a racy move. I sort of wasn't really sure what I wanted to do, I knew I wanted to do something in the arts but then I knew I definitely wanted to have kids so I just thought, 'Why don't I have kids and then I've got that done?' Check," she laughs.

Jade recently added a new addition to her brood: nine-month-old son Ray, who has two older sisters, Assisi, 22, and Amba, 19. Her son was born just four weeks after Assisi became a mother herself, to daughter Ezra Key, making Jade a new grandma and a new mother at the same time.

"I was in Ibiza and I went and had a few shots... I was a little bit scared. I don't really know what of, and I certainly didn't expect to find myself pregnant a month later," Jagger tells Daly of her reaction to finding out her daughter was pregnant.

"I thought it was a great thing and I was really happy. She's a great mum," she continues, explaining how wonderful it was to be going through her pregnancy at the same time as her daughter and sharing their growing bumps together.

"And then now, you know, it's great because she reads all the books and she tells me what I should be doing."

Jagger was interviewed by Tess Daly as part of AOL Original series, Being Mum, and discussed what it felt like to be labelled a "geriatric mum" and why she kept her latest pregnancy hidden for as long as possible.

"Well, I kept it a secret, from even my family, for as long as I possibly could. The sweaters were just getting bigger and bigger, until my daughter and I were in the bathroom and I think I just had to reveal it.

"You know, when the doctors say that you're a geriatric mum - that's the title for it - I was a bit apprehensive, yeah I was. I worried. Lots of people told me that I was going to be so much more tired, and I did worry that it was just going to knock me sideways.

"But actually, I've got quite a lot of energy and I'm used to the early mornings. It sort of hadn't really stopped in my life."

Jagger also revealed the most difficult experience she's faced as a parent: a car crash in Ibiza that left daughter Amba with both legs broken.

"I think it left me much more careful, much more aware that things can happen, things do happen and just to be extra, extra careful about safety and doing whatever you can.

"You know, as a mum, you do still worry about your kids. And even when they grow up. I still do. You're always mum. And gran. Not the typical grandma!"

The Being Mum series, hosted by Rochelle Humes and Tess Daly, is a beautiful and humbling series that defines what it means to be a mother today.

In each episode Rochelle or Tess will meet a well-known personality, or a mother with a remarkable story, to discuss the ups, the downs, the ins and outs of what being a mother is really like.
