Michelin Guide 2015 Gives Stars To Country Pubs And 'Hipster Hangouts'

With so many restaurants in the UK and Ireland, it can be hard to know where to find the most delicious food. But the Michelin Guide 2015 has just been released to help you do just that.

In Great Britain and Ireland 14 new eateries have been awarded with the coveted stars this year. Restaurants ranging from country pubs to "hipster hangouts" are among the new stars announced in the latest guide.

The prestigious Michelin Guide, widely considered to be the pinnacle of restaurant ratings, has awarded new stars all across the UK - including two in Wales, two on the Scottish islands and one in Cornwall.

They include Isle of Eriska in Eriska and Three Chimneys and The House Over-By on the Isle of Skye, Ynyshir Hall in Machynlleth, and the Crown at Whitebrook in Monmouth.

Cornwall's latest star has gone to Port Isaac's Nathan Outlaw and his Outlaw's Fish Kitchen.

The Treby Arms, owned by MasterChef 2012 winner Anton Piotrowski, is one of three new pubs to gain a star.

The guide said the diversity was even more pronounced in London, referring to two restaurants with counters awarded stars - Spanish tapas bar Barrafina and Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs, which serves a no-choice set menu.

Other London winners are Indian restaurant Gymkhana, The Clove Club and Fera at Claridge's, headed by Simon Rogan, while Jason Atherton has achieved another star at City Social.

The guide's editor, Rebecca Burr, said: "The 14 new stars in our 2015 guide highlight the enormous richness and variety of the UK's restaurant scene. They range from country pubs to hipster hangouts, from counter restaurants to classic dining rooms.

"The public's knowledge and interest in food gets greater every year and it won't just be fans of cookery shows who will be planning trips to Devon to the Treby Arms.

"The Clove Club shows that there is no shortage of talented young chefs coming through. Barrafina has just got better and better over the years and even when a second branch was being planned and subsequently opened, we still experienced the same high standard of cooking."

This year's selection also sees 26 new Bib Gourmands, nine of which are in London, which recognise restaurants offering good food at affordable prices, the limit being £28 for three courses.

They include Iberico World Tapas in Derby, 64 in Brighton, and Palomar in Soho, as well as The Gannet and Ox and Finch, both in Glasgow.

Burr said: "The Bib Gourmand awards also reflect the continuing trend for competitively-priced, less structured and more flexible dining."

At Campton Place, you'll find fine dining with all its trappings: white tablecloth and leather booths, poised servers in suits and a wine cellar containing over 1,500 vintages. A beautiful blown glass bouquet hangs in the middle of the room, aptly signifying the delicacy and exquisiteness of the restaurant's dishes. The staff here is obviously a point of pride: Chef Srijith Gopinathan has worked in the kitchen of a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Oxford, England, and the Master Sommelier, Richard Dean, is one of only 150 people in the world to actively hold that title. Ame opened in 2005 to much critical and popular acclaim, offering a mixture of Japanese and new American cuisine that is still a hit with locals and visitors alike. The chefs, Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani, who are renowned for their Napa Valley debut restaurant Terra, create a menu that mixes fresh Californian ingredients with Japanese and New American cooking techniques. Ame is open only for dinner -- a five-course tasting menu is available -- but a few select dishes are also available at the lobby bar for lunch.

Luce was awarded a Michelin star three years consecutively for Chef Dominique Crenn's New-American cuisine, including such house specialties as braised short ribs with haricot verts, roasted cipollini and horseradish and roasted local organic chicken with slow-cooked egg, corn and bacon bread salad. More recently, the Versailles-born chef was invited to participate in the Food Network series The Next Iron Chef.

Michael Mina opened his fifth Bourbon Steak restaurant in the Westin St. Francis in December 2010. Executive Chef Omri Aflalo, who did an externship with Mina while at the Culinary Institute of America, is at the helm of the San Francisco locale. The broad menu includes some of Mina's greatest hits, including lobster corn dogs, black truffle popcorn and lobster pot pie. As far as the steak, notable options are a 28-ounce Porterhouse, an 18-ounce bone-in rib-eye and a six-ounce Australian Wagyu strip.
