Woman's Mesmerising Colour Changing Hair Video Kick Starts Oil Slick Trend

Woman's Mesmerising Oil Slick Hair Video Kick Starts New Trend
|

A woman runs her hand through her dark hair to reveal a flash of beautiful purple, blue and green tones in a video that has inspired countless trips to the hairdressers.

Jaye from Singapore posted the video on Tumblr on November 6 after getting her hair dyed. In two weeks it amassed more than 330,000 views and Jaye has been inundated with questions about her hairstyle.

Sportingly she's not only given permission for others to copy the 'do, but has given detailed advice on what to ask your hairdresser for.

"To everyone who wants to do this with their hair, and especially you sweet anon, my blessing has been given," she wrote on Tumblr.

The clip that launched a thousand haircuts

Jaye's unique style involves taking the colour palette from the oil-slick hair trend and applying the dye to just one layer of the hair.

"Arm yourself with knowledge about oil slick hair," she advises. "At the salon, tell them to put it under a layer of hair.

"For me, they gathered a bunch of my hair at the top in a circleish ponytail, took the layer underneath that and only dyed that part.

"So there’s that layer of hair which was bleached and dyed, and there’s layers of hair underneath that which are my natural hair colour."

Worried about how it will look once the dye starts to fade?

You needn't be as Jaye explains: "I like it, but I like fading in general; a not so nice state is objective."

She posted the picture below to show how her hair looked after a few weeks.

The oil slick trend was started by a colourist called Aura Friedman.

Friedman told Popsugar: ‘I’ve been trying to recreate gasoline or oil when it’s on the ground and it rains. I find that when you take a dark purple and a dark green and layer them one on top of the other, you end up with this iridescent feeling.’
