River Cottage Schools In East Devon Cancel Hot Meals Due To Lack Of Money

Hugh Who? River Cottage School Cancel Hot Meals Due To Lack Of Money

A primary school which featured in a celebrity chef's television series about helping children eat more healthily have been forced to cancel hot meals as they can no longer afford them.

Mrs Ethelston's C of E primary, Uplyme, in Lyme Regis, appeared in Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's popular daytime TV series River Cottage but is now struggling to make ends meet.

The change is a result of a partnership between Devon County Council and Norfolk-based Norse company, resulting in a 10-year contract covering 300 schools. The firm already supplies cleaning services to schools in Devon.

Joint executive head of the two schools Andrea Rice told BBC Radio Devon the new contract with Devon Norse had seen the cost of the meals increase, including adding a 12% management fee.

Only children who receive free school meals at St Andrew's, Chardstock and the Uplyme primary will be offered a hot lunch.

Whittingstall is the latest chef to use schools as part of his entertainment programmes. In 2005, Jamie's School Dinners was broadcast on Channel 4, signalling Jamie Oliver's tentative steps into the political sphere with his Feed Me Better campaign, which continues to be a huge success.

Unfortunately, the River Cottage star is currently 8000 miles away, filming in the middle of the ocean, so is not available to comment until his return next month.

Norse Devon managing director Ray Beale said at the time of the deal in September last year: "We will be ensuring that the pupils are offered a balanced and varied range of meals, catering for special dietary requirements and as far a possible using ingredients sourced locally."
