Sony has unveiled a new lighter and thinner PS3 ahead of the Christmas sales rush.

The third iteration of Sony's gaming hardware will feature a lower power consumption, and its smallest-ever form-factor.

The PS3 'SuperSlim' will be available in a number of bundles in the UK.

A 500GB high-end bundle will also be released, for around the same price as the current 320GB model.

It will be released on 28 September, alongside a Fifa 13 bundle (which is released on the same day).

The family-focused edition, which will feature just 12GB of storage space, will be released on 12 October, for a similar price to the 160GB model offered currently.

Sony do not release their own recommended retail prices.

The company said in a statement:

Completely redesigning the internal design architecture, the internal volume and weight of the new PS3 is reduced by more than half compared to the very first PS3 model with a 60GB HDD, and by 20 % and 25% respectively compared to the current PS3. By adopting a sliding disk cover, the new PS3 continues with the characteristic sleek curved simple body design, which fits various places in the home and enables users to enjoy an array of entertainment content.
