Perhaps the most startling aspect of the training was that we were being taught how to recognise traits of radicalisation before we'd learnt the first thing about diagnosing psychosis. I don't make this comparison flippantly or for rhetorical impact; its ramifications are clear.

It's clear that David Cameron is not the progressive Prime Minister of LGBT equality that his supporters make him out to be. He's a shrewd politician whose noncommittal approach on gay marriage allowed him to ride a wave of popular support for LGBT equality, rather than leading it.

It is this debate that secularists, both religious and otherwise, are fighting for. The movement doesn't aim to destroy or dismantle religion, but to create a society where no one group is granted special privilege or power. A society which ensures that all beliefs are protected and welcomed equally. But this debate can only be had once you stop using "secularism" as a slur.

Feminists must remember what liberation means - it is not just equal opportunity to be financially independent or to hold positions of authority. Liberation is about much more - it's the freedom to be yourself regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, class or gender. As soon as we assign stereotypes to any identity we create expectations of how individuals should behave...
