90s Brown Lipstick Is Back – Here's How We're Wearing It In 2019

The iconic trend has had a revival.

The 90s were a memorable time for style trends: think slicked back hair, frosted lipstick and skinny eyebrows. *Shudders*

But perhaps the epitome of the 90s is brown lippy once worn with slightly-darker lip liner. Tyra Banks, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears were all fans of the look, and it graced many a red carpet throughout the decade.

And don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you have to recreate the lip-lined look to a T – it’s had a makeover for 2019. Line your lips using a shade that’s only slightly darker than the lipstick you’re using, and blur the edges with a dense makeup brush before swiping lipstick over the top.

Don’t just take our word for it, Lily Collins, Gigi Hadid and Kim Kardasian have all worn the look in different ways of late. And Kim Kardashian has even launched a makeup range from KKW Beauty paying homage to the decade. So while your memories of the 90s may be a distant blur, the lipstick trend is here to stay.

Collins’s makeup artist, Fiona Stiles, shows how you can also opt for a full coverage, maximum impact look, by swiping a dark shade of brown across lips.

Makeup artist Patrick Ta painted Gigi Hadid lips with a more neutral, soft caramel brown in a nod to the 90s with a modern update.

Kardashian’s go-to makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic created this bold look, teaming frosted, icy blue lids with expertly applied liner and a pale nude lipstick.

To recreate the trend yourself, try out one of these lipsticks.

Paying homage to the iconic supermodels of the 90s, this tawny-brown shade is richly pigmented for an intense colour payoff and matte finish – so you can be sure it will last all day long.

Liquid lipstick queen, Huda Kattan, created her first solid lipsticks earlier this year in an array of nudes, browns, reds and pinks. This Graduation Day shade is our favourite. Matte but non-drying, it’s going straight in our shopping basket.

This satin lipstick will be flattering on darker skin tones. The creamy texture makes application a breeze, as there’s a little room for error. It’s medium coverage but buildable so you can amp up the intensity if you wish. Go bold or go home, we say.

High street brand NYX has made a name for itself thanks to its long-lasting and well-loved lip products. In its lipliner range, you’ll find shades to suit every skin tone. We gravitated towards Cocoa, a burgundy brown hybrid that’s perfect for recreating the 90s look.

A liquid lipstick with a matte finish will stay put through your lunch, endless cups of tea and beyond – so if you don’t have time for touch-ups, pick this one from L’Oreal Paris. I Stand is a shade that promises to be lightweight, comfortable with no flaking involved. Hurrah.
