Avengers: Endgame arrived in cinemas last month and fans flocked to watch the culmination of the 22-film Marvel franchise.

It’s no surprise then, that the movie has smashed box office records and reset the bar on what cinematic success looks like.

Here are seven of the most mind-blowing stats about the release…

1. It took a record-breaking $157 million on day one

This smashed the previous record of $119million, set by 2015’s Star Wars instalment, The Force Awakens.

2. Endgame hit the $2billion (£1.5m) mark in just 11 days...

This makes it the fastest film to ever do so – for comparison, it took Avatar 47 days to earn the same amount of money.

3. Which makes it the second highest-grossing film of all-time

The Marvel movie leapfrogged Titanic, which previously held third place on the best-selling movies of all-time list.

The news prompted congratulations from Titanic director James Cameron, who tweeted a mocked-up image of the Titanic resting on the Avengers logo, immersed in water.

Alongside it, he wrote: “An iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took the Avengers to sink my Titanic.

“Everyone here at Lightstorm Entertainment salutes your amazing achievement. You’ve shown that the movie industry is not only alive and well, it’s bigger than ever.”

James still holds the top spot though, as Avatar is the highest-grossing film ever.

4. Nearly 40 million tickets were sold for the first weekend alone

40. Million. Plenty of these were for midnight screenings (which are the most failsafe way to avoid spoilers).

This doesn’t mean 40 million people saw it on the first weekend though, as many of those tickets could have been sold to fans seeing it for the second (or third) time, in just as many days.

5. Endgame will overtake Avatar If it takes another $800 million

This may sound like a hell of a lot of money, but if Avengers tickets continue to sell well then this won’t be a problem at all.

6. It’s also on course to break records in the UK and Ireland

Endgame has taken £69.3 million here, which is enough to put it just outside the 20 highest grossing films since current records began.

Marvel

By next week, it’ll most likely be well on its way to overtaking classics including 1993’s Jurassic Park (£75.8 million) and 1975’s Jaws (£80.6 million).

7. In the UK, it’s already taken almost the entire amount grossed by Avengers: Infinity War in the whole of 2018.

That’s £70.8 million by the way. 👀
