A few hours later her body was discovered in a filled waste water sewage pipe, which French prosecutors said was about 20m from her home in Le Goberderie, Rumigny, ITV reported.

On Wednesday, La Gobarderie was hit by flash floods and a storm.

Police are said to be investigating whether the girl was dragged away by an unusually strong river flow.

A counselling unit has reportedly been set up at the child's school.
