Coleen Rooney has been hailed a super sleuth and dubbed #WagathaChristie after she used her detective skills to figure out who was leaking stories to the press from her private Instagram account.

But the wife of footballer Wayne might have a Manchester-based poker player to thank for helping her uncover who was behind the fake stories appearing in The Sun.

Back in January, Coleen suggested someone was behind leaking a fake tabloid story about her being involved in a car crash.

“Thank you for the messages asking if I am ok… the car crash story was completely wrong,” tweeted. “I wasn’t involved in a crash... the car was damaged by another car. Someone on my private Instagram seen the picture and is telling or selling stories to a certain newspaper.”

She added in another tweet: “It’s happened several times now over the past couple of years. It’s sad to think someone, who I have accepted to follow me is betraying for either money or to keep a relationship with the press.”

Her tweets prompting one of her followers – Dave from Manchester – to respond, suggesting a way she could catch the culprit.

“Make a false story tell people different things see which one comes out = find the culprit,” he tweeted.

Since the drama unfolded, Dave has changed his Twitter name to “Detective Dave” and updated his bio to read “Football, darts, #MUFC, poker player. Detective who recently solved the Coleen Rooney vs Rebekah Vardy case”.

Twitter praised Dave for helping Coleen, with one tweeting her: “You owe Dave a pint after that amazing idea, surely?”

Another labelled the duo “Sherlock and Watson”, with a third adding: “If we’re sending Coleen to fix Brexit, Dave is her Dominic Cummings.”

Coleen’s reps have insisted that it is “irrefutable” that the stories “came from one account, and one account only”, after she suggested Rebekah Vardy’s Instagram account was behind the leaks.

Rebekah has insisted she “never” speaks to journalists about Coleen.

However, on Wednesday evening a spokesman for Coleen said: “It is irrefutable that the leaks came from one account, and one account only.”

According to reports, Rebekah has cut short her holiday in Dubai with husband Jamie and is flying home in a bid to prove her innocence with the help of IT experts.

The drama kicked off on Wednesday when Coleen posted a message on social media saying she had spent months trying to work out who was sharing stories about her.

Denying she was responsible, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy responded within minutes.

Rebekah, who is pregnant with her fifth child, said she was “so upset” that Rooney had made the accusation, adding: “I’m disgusted that I’m even having to deny this.

“You should have called me the first time this happened.”

The Sun has since responded to Coleen and Rebekah’s exchange, stating: “Each of the stories provided to The Sun was put to Coleen’s representatives before publication, and on each occasion they declined to comment.”
