Derry Girls fans will know that the girls are always getting themselves into various sticky situations, so the cast’s turn in the Bake Off tent is sure to be a real treat.

It has been revealed the stars of the Channel 4 sitcom are set to take part in a New Year special of The Great British Bake Off.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn and Siobhan McSweeney will all be attempting to impress judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood as they’re put through their baking paces.

And by the sound of things, filming didn’t go too well as Nicola – who plays Clare – has said she is now triggered when she thinks about fondant icing.

She wrote: “The News is Out! #DerryGirls do #BakeOff!!! Tune in on New Years Day to see if we burn down the tent.”

She then added: “Yes I now have PTSD when I think about fondant icing.”

Previous festive specials of Bake Off have seen former contestants return to the tent in an attempt to win the title of Festive Star Baker.

The most recent series of the Channel 4 show finished last month, crowning David Atherton as the winner, after he beat off competition from Steph Blackwell and Alice Fevronia.

Derry Girls has proved to be a huge hit for Channel 4, becoming the network’s biggest comedy launch since 2004, the most successful comedy launch ever on catch-up service All4 and the most-watched show in Northern Ireland on record.

The show has also been reaching a new global audience since its debut on Netflix.

It was confirmed earlier this year that a third series had been commissioned, and is set to air in 2020.

The Great Festive Bake Off will air on Channel 4 on New Years Day.
