Summer is here, bringing with it scorching days and humid nights.

While we welcome the hot weather after a long and dreary winter, the stuffy nights can make for pretty unbearable sleeping conditions.

In fact, research from bed manufacturer Sealy UK revealed that 42% of us regularly wake up in the night due to the muggy, oppressive heat.

To combat this rather glaring problem, expert Neil Robinson has issued some top tips and tricks to help you sleep like a baby once more.

1. Cool your sheets

Put your bedding in the fridge or freezer for 10 minutes before you go to bed. This gives much-needed relief from the sweltering temperature in your bedroom.

If you’re pushed for space, then just cool your pillow case instead.

2. Sleep solo

Unromantic, yes, but the heat doesn’t have mercy for anyone - loving couples included.

If the heat is unbearable then spending the night in different beds can help you stay cool.

3. Create a fan ‘cross flow’

Opening a window and positioning a fan alongside it can help create a cooling flow throughout the room.

4. Dip your feet

Position a bucket of cool water next to your bed and dip your foot in it while you drift off. It can help cool down the rest of your body.

Just don’t spill it!

5. Have a cold shower

Pretty self explanatory. Have a cold shower to cool you down right before bed.

6. Buy a floor fan

An underrated investment for the summer months - a simple floor fan maintains a cool breeze in your bedroom.

Opt for one that uses minimal electricity and operates silently.

7. Use sheets

Get rid of your winter duvet and sleep under a thin sheet instead to cool down.

8. ‘Cold press’ your pulse points

Pulse points on your body can cool the rest of you effectively.

Place a cold flannel or ice cubes in a plastic bag on your wrists and neck to cool off. Just don’t let them melt in your bed.

9. Invest in a cooler mattress

For those who live in hot conditions on a more permanent basis, it makes sense to buy a cooler mattress. Some mattresses use special technology which can help keep you cool and comfortable at all times.

10. Think cold thoughts

If none of these suggestions are providing any relief, then perhaps the heat is getting to you psychologically.

If this is the case, think of a cool spring, a glacier, or an ice cream as you drift off.

11. Avoid alcohol

Dehydrating yourself before sleep on a hot night isn’t the best decision. Stay away from the drink to heighten your chances of sleep during a heatwave.
