A lorry carrying thousands of tubes of Pringles crisps has caught fire on the M1 motorway in the east Midlands.

Flames took hold of the heavy goods vehicle near junction 25 in Derbyshire at about 7am on Sunday, and a slip road was closed.

Highways England said the driver was able to escape the cab and detach the trailer without being injured.

On the Highways England Twitter feed, burnt tubes of Pringles were pictured at the side of the lorry in the aftermath.

The images show emergency services, Crouch Recovery and traffic officers working to clear the A52 slip road for Derby and Nottingham.

The clean-up meant the road did not reopen until about 2.20pm.
