A man has been arrested in connection to a hate crime against a Muslim woman whose hijab was pulled off her on a London underground platform, police said.

A 51-year-old man from Wembley was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault, the British Transport Police said.

He has been taken to police custody as enquiries continue.

The incident was reported to BTP after an image appeared on social media over the course of the weekend.

A person who said they are a friend of victim tweeted about what happened on a platform at Turnpike Lane Station on Saturday morning.

The woman also complained that her friend pressed the emergency button on the platform three times but nobody came to help.

On Monday night, Brian Woodhead, director of customer service for London Underground, said: “We are doing everything we can to support the BTP’s investigation.”
