Rosalind Knight, the veteran actor known for her various comedy roles over the years, has died at the age of 87.
On Sunday, Rosalind’s family said in a statement: “It is with huge sadness that the family of Rosalind Knight announce her death following a glorious career as a well-loved actress in theatre, TV and film.”
Paying tribute to her various on-screen roles, they continued: “She was known to so many generations, for so many different roles, and will be missed as much by the kids today who howl at Horrible Grandma in Friday Night Dinner as by those of us who are old enough to remember her in the very first Carry On films.”
In the late 1950s, Rosalind played roles in Blue Murder At St Trinian’s and two Carry On films, Carry On Nurse and Carry On Teacher.
More recently, she had a role in the film About A Boy and the comedy Gimme Gimme Gimme in which she played Beryl, an elderly neighbour of the central characters.
The sitcom’s creator Jonathan Harvey tweeted on Sunday: “So sad to hear that Rosalind Knight has died. She was just perfect as [...] Beryl in Gimme Gimme Gimme, and of course she had a very distinguished career before and after.”
Co-star Kathy Burke also paid tribute, calling Rosalind “simply glorious”.
As well as playing Princess Alice Of Battenberg in an early episode of the Netflix drama The Crown, Rosalind could also be seen in the Channel 4 comedy Friday Night Dinner as “Horrible Grandma”.
Rosalind was married to theatre producer Michael Elliott from 1959 until his death in 1984. Together they had two children, Marianne and Susanna.
