If you want to reduce the environmental impact of your shopping habit, pineapples are here to help.
Dutch footwear brand Mercer Amsterdam has created a sustainable, vegan trainer from Piñatex – a material made from the fibres of pineapple leaves.
“These leaves are discarded from the pineapple harvest, so the raw material requires no additional environmental resources to produce,” the brand explains on its website. “The leaves are bought from farmers in the Philippines.”

The tanning process of Piñatex also uses a low amount of water compared to other materials, according to the brand, and has low production waste containing “no harmful chemicals or animal products”.
Although Mercer Amsterdam describes itself as the first to make a “luxury sneaker” in this way, it isn’t the first company to use the pineapple-derived material – Hugo Boss previously launched a limited edition Piñatex trainer.
The ‘W3RD Vegan Pineapple’ trainers don’t come cheap, at €250.00 (around £217.00). But if you’re willing to splash the cash for some pineapple-y goodness, the company does offer free worldwide shipping on all orders over €100.
The shoes are available on pre-order now until the 31 March, and deliveries will start by the end of April.
