Wayne Rooney has denied the latest cheating accusations made about him in the media, accusing The Sun of a “smear” campaign against him.

Over the weekend, the footballer was photographed with an unknown woman at a hotel in Vancouver, in pictures published by the tabloid newspaper.

The Sun has since run several stories claiming his wife, Coleen Rooney, had “ditched her wedding ring” since the photos were taken, suggesting their marriage was on the rocks.

On Wednesday afternoon, Wayne broke his silence on the pictures, in a statement he posted on Twitter, alongside the message: “The Sun – enough is enough.”

He wrote: “The Sun this week ran a front page story making it look like I took a girl back to my team hotel. They know that it’s not true and that I did not. They are using mine and my family’s name to sell papers.

“Nothing happened between me and any girl on that night in Vancouver. I did not enter the lift with any girl pictured in the hotel foyer.

“The girl in the club was simply one of many who innocently asked for autographs and pictures.”

Taking aim at the tabloid, he continued: “The photographs published by The Sun were taken by a freelance photographer who followed me and team mates to take long range shots, without our knowledge or permission.

“The pictures sold to the newspaper were selected and edited to create a sensational and completely untrue story about me.

“This whole story is a smear against me. It is damaging to my family and is not something I am prepared to put up with.”

Wayne and wife Coleen have been together since they were teenagers, and married in 2008.

The couple welcomed their fourth son, Cass Mac Rooney, in February 2018.

Later that year, it was announced that Wayne had signed a three-and-a-half year deal with US soccer team D.C. United.
