A woman in China is reported to have killed herself and her two young children after her husband allegedly faked his own death for an insurance pay-out.

The man, identified only by the surname He, turned himself in to police after the tragic deaths of his family members, according to a statement on social media platform WeChat.

According to the Straits Times, the bodies of his wife, named only as Dai, and their children aged four and three, were recovered from a body of water in China’s Hunan province on 11 October.

Dai posted a suicide letter online claiming she wished to “accompany” her husband and that she “only ever wanted our family of four to be together”, the Voice of China reported.

The deaths came after He disappeared on 7 September. The car he was driving was found in the Zijang River on 19 September, though his body was not located.

He is reportedly being held on charges of insurance fraud and intentional damage to property.
