The body of a woman has been recovered from flood waster in Derbyshire, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of the River Derwent in Darley Dale, close to Matlock, in the early hours on Friday morning.

A woman was reported as having been swept away by flood water in nearby Rowsley. The body found on Friday is believed to be the same woman found in Darley Dale, and was recovered at around 10.40am.

Despite formal identification having not yet taken place, Derbyshire Police said the family of the woman have been informed, with a spokesperson writing “our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Homes across the Midlands and parts of the north of England were evacuated on Thursday, as extreme rainfall caused widespread flooding.

In Sheffield, shoppers were forced to spend the night in a shopping centre after it was cut off by rising flood water.

Met Office meteorologists issued an amber weather warning, signalling a “danger to life”, earlier this week.

The worst of the rain was expected to have passed by Friday lunchtime, however more than a hundred flood warnings are currently in place and the scale of the damage remains unknown.
