David Cameron and Barack Obama have confirmed that British and American forces in Afghanistan will move to a "support role" from next year.
The US President, speaking a joint press conference at the White House rose garden on Wednesday, said there would be no "steep cliff" at the end of 2014 off which troop numbers would fall.
"If we maintain a steady responsible transition process which is what we have designed, then I am confident we can put Afghans in a position where they can deal with their own security," he said.
"I don't anticipate we will be making any sudden additional changes to the plan we have.
Obama also said the gradual draw down of troops would mean there would still be a "robust coalition presence" in Afghanistan during this "fighting season" to ensure the Taliban did not make quick gains.
Cameron said that the recent deaths of British soldiers in the war and the murder of civilians by an American soldier reminded everyone how "difficult" the task was.
But he said the UK and US would "not give up on this mission".
"We wont build a perfect Afghanistan... we can help ensure that Afghanistan is capable of delivering its own security," he said.
Leon Panetta arrived to meet with troops, commanders and Afghan government officials just days after a US soldier went on a deadly shooting spree.
Cameron went on: "We are now in the final phases of our military mission."
"That transition to Afghan control, as agreed at Lisbon, is now well under way. And next year, as the president said, in 2013, this includes shifting to a support role.
"This is in advance of Afghans taking full responsibility for security in 2014."
In a press conference in bright sunshine outside the White House, the leaders paid tribute to relations between Britain and the US.
"There are some countries whose alliance is a matter of convenience, but ours is a matter of conviction," the prime minister said.
President Obama in turn described Cameron as an "outstanding ally, partner and friend".

That Afghanistan is a failed project has been obvious for some time. Yet all the anonymous high officials and commanders blather on about how NOW there is a risk of an otherwise viable strategy being stymied. This display of conceit and ignorance is calculated deceit.
I am a person who does not belong to any political party and when voting, I vote for the “Person,” not the political party. In the 2008 election, I voted for Barack Obama for President and I can say that I have supported many of the causes that President Obama has fought for. However, there are several causes that I have issues with and I’m on the other side of the fence than the President. I have very strong feelings about both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Although the U.S. Military occupied Iraq for about 10 years, forcing Democracy on the Iraqi citizen’s for all that time, shortly after our troops were completely gone, there has been a steady transition back to many of the Iraqi’s cultural ways they have lived for a thousand years or more. I think it will be the same with Afghanistan whether the U.S. Military leaves in 6 months or at the end of 2014. I have serious concerns about Barack Obama’s, adamant, stubborn, bull headed and egotistical attitude when it comes to him “Rationalizing” his commitment to completing the mission successfully by turning over security responsibility to Afghan forces by the end of 2014. What I hear the Majority of American Citizen’s saying is, “They want all of the U.S. Troops out of Afghanistan ASAP.” And, I too share this point of view. It’s time for the American Citizen’s to decide America’s Military future in Afghanistan, more sooner than later.

Our soldiers have nothing to do there. After 10 years of training Afganistan should be by now full of highly educated profiles, what kind of training is that if it last 10 years?

Like Iraq, Afganistan is collapsing..they won;t be able to deal with anything when left o their own, but at this point I don;t care...
we were ordered out of Iraq by the Iraqi's last year, Obama made it sould like wWE were withdrawing...we got kicked out..and now we're about to be driven out of Afganistan. Smarten up America, these countries are not our Business....not Egypt, Libya, Somlia, Syria..none of them, because we can do nothing to make things better, its NOT our culture...

Why the delay? Afganistan will go down the toilet just the same whether we pull out tomorrow, next year, or in fifty years time. All that we are doing is wasting more lives and more money.

Conservative Friends of Israel to transmogrify into the British Israel Public Affairs Committee?
The cementing of transatlantic ties by the special relationship between David Cameron and Barack Obama, is a ‘good thing’, or is it?
Does this mean that we can shortly expect the CFI to transmogrify itself into the British Israel Public Affairs Committee (BIPAC) as the UK cell of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) – that powerful, unelected pressure group which has such undue influence over US foreign policy?
If so, then the lobby would have covertly achieved an (unelected) seat within the legislatures of the UK and the EU, as well as of the US. For a Middle Eastern state, that is neither a member of Europe nor of America, to have such astonishing influence, would represent a distinctly dangerous threat to all these democratic governments that together represent electorates of over 800 million people.
We in Europe want peace not nuclear war, and that means a nuclear weapons free Middle East to include both Iran and Israel.

Have to say Douglas,Israeli nukes havent caused me any sleepless nights and I imagine they have actaully been beneficial in bring an air of realism to many of Israel's Arab neighbors most of whom who now prefer to get along quietly with Israel.I am a citizen of Europe and you certainly dont speak for me, my family or anyone else I know. In fact many people, that I can see, kind of like having a dependable ally like Israel in that area.

David Cameron and Barack Obama confirmed Afghanistan Exit Plan by saying US and UK troops would stay. There would be no "steep cliff" at the end of 2014 off which troop numbers would fall. Obama confirmed the US exit plan by saying US troops would stay and there would still be a "robust coalition presence" (of US troops) in Afghanistan. Cameron confirmed the UK exit plan by saying UK troops would stay and that the UK would "not give up on this mission". US and UK forces (military ) in Afghanistan will execute their exit plan by staying and moving to a "support role" from next year, and staying. "There are some countries whose alliance is a matter of convenience, but ours is a matter of conviction," the prime minister said. Conviction to staying in Afghanistan, forever.
