Cees Van Dam

A London based professor writing about rights and wrongs

Born in the Netherlands, he made a successful career as an academic, consultant and judge in his home country. He read law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and Utrecht University and received a Ph.D. (cum laude) from Utrecht University for a study on comparative tort law.

He worked at the Dutch Ministry of Justice, was a full professor of private law at the VU University in Amsterdam, and served several years as deputy judge.

In 2002, he moved to London to spend a sabbatical and write his book ‘European Tort Law’ on the national tort laws of France, Germany and England, and the influences of European Union law and the European Convention on Human Rights.

He worked at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and since 2007 he is an independent legal consultant advising law firms, governments, companies, and NGO’s on a range of issues. His internationally acknowledged expertise is in areas tort law, product liability, airline accidents, contract law, EU law, business and human rights and consumer law (including air passenger rights). He is holding academic positions at King’s College London, Queen Mary, University of London and Utrecht University.

His over 130 publications include 10 sole-authored books on supra-national, comparative and domestic law topics. He has been (keynote) speaker and chair at various international conferences, forums, and meetings.
