TV Watching Linked To Depression In Older Women

Could Your TV Be Making You Depressed?

US scientists have discovered a link between TV watching and depression in older women.

The study of 5,000 women by Harvard School of Public Health found that those who exercised for 90 minutes a day instead of sitting in front of the TV, were 20% less likely to be struck down with depression than those who only clocked up 10 minutes of activity.

Not only that but women who watched TV for three hours or more, had a 13% higher risk of being depressed than those who hardly switched on the TV.

The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, concluded that exercise boosts self-esteem, sense of control and endorphin levels which help keep depression away.

"Higher levels of physical activity were associated with lower depression risk," says the author of the study, Michel Lucas.

Like lack of exercise, poor diet can also be a trigger for depression. Find out if your daily diet is making you feel depressed with this round-up of mood-lowering foods you should avoid.
