'So Bad It Could Cause A Diplomatic Row': The Verdict On Cameron's Aussie Accent

We don't know if Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was impressed by David Cameron's impersonation of her accent at the Lord Mayor's Banquet - but her fellow Aussies certainly weren't.

The prime minister, speaking about chairing a meeting with Commonwealth countries where it was agreed to change the rules of the royal succession, told attendees: "I turned to the Australian prime minister and said, 'thank you very much for letting us have this meeting in Australia'.

"And she said, I can't quite do the accent but I'll try: 'Not a bit David, this is good news for Sheilas everywhere'."

The Australian Telegraph described it as one of the "worst Aussie accents in history" and "so bad it could cause a diplomatic row".

And the Business Spectator labelled it "questionable", as it wondered why some of the British media had defended Cameron's efforts.
