Police are investigating after a body was found on a beach.

Officers were called to the seaside resort of Southsea, Portsmouth, after a member of the public discovered a man's body near the Pyramids Centre shortly before 5.30pm yesterday.

Detective Chief Inspector Dick Pearson said: "We are in the very early stages of our investigation but would appeal for anyone who saw something on the beach in this area or who were at the beach or promenade in front of the Pyramids on Tuesday afternoon to contact us.

"In particular we are interested in a group of 10 to 15 foreign students and a teacher who approached workmen at the Pyramids area on Tuesday afternoon to say they had found an item on the beach.

"We are currently working to establish the identity of the body, who we believe to be a man, and to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident."
