Syria Crisis: Regime 'Targeting Hospitals' As Fighting Intensifies

Syrian Regime 'Targeting Hospitals'

Fighting continues to rage in Syria amid claims the government is targeting hospitals in Aleppo.

Syria's second city is one of the key battlegrounds in the conflict between rebel fighters and the government, and according to rebels three hospitals have been targeted by government helicopters.

The activist group Avaaz was reporting comments made by a doctor in Aleppo’s Rebel Union.

“The regime forces are deliberately targeting field, private and public hospitals. Two weeks ago, a bomb was planted at the gate of Sha’ar hospital," Dr Yasser claimed.

"The regime's helicopters have targeted three hospitals in the neighbourhoods of Sha’ar, Sukkari and Salaheddine four times in the past two weeks, which destroyed the operating theatres and intensive care units at Sha’ar hospital.”

The claims come as Reuters reported a near-record number of refugees fleeing to Turkey in the last 24 hours, with over 3.500 crossing the border.

There are now thought to be more than 78,000 Syrians in Turkey, according to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate.

According to activists the Syrian Network for Human Rights over 100 people died in and around Syria's capital city, Damascus, - while 28 people died in Aleppo. Overall, 200 people were killed in Syria on Wednesday, the group reported.

An Avaaz spokesperson said Aleppo was a "battleground".

"During the past few days, the Free Syrian Army has claimed control of neighbourhoods including Tal, Hamidiya and Suleiman al Halabi, while the neighbourhoods of Masaken Hanano, Bustan al Pasha, Sheikh Maksoud, Sakhour and Sha’ar are being bombed from the air by the Syrian Airforce.

"Local rebel forces are waging fierce guerrilla battles in the neighbourhoods of Salaheddine and Sukkari."
