Three zoo workers have been arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal after an elephant was allegedly beaten.
Leicestershire Police said three men had been arrested and questioned in connection with the unnecessary suffering of an elephant at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire.
The men were released on police bail, pending further inquiries over the offence which happened last month, a foce spokeswoman said.
In a statement Leicestershire Police said: "We are currently carrying out an investigation in connection with the unnecessary suffering to an elephant at Twycross Zoo.
"The offence happened in September 2012.
"Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on police bail pending further inquiries."
The spokeswoman confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
