UK Weather: Suspects Caught by Snowy Footprints

Cover your Tracks Or Get Your Collar Felt

The wintry conditions sweeping the country put the skids under two crime suspects who were arrested after police tracked footprints left in the snow.

West Midlands Police said a 17-year-old boy was detained in Sedgley, near Dudley, last night, shortly after bricks were thrown at passing vehicles.

A police spokesman said fresh tracks in the snow led officers to the teenager, who was taken into custody just four minutes after an initial report of disorder at around 11.10pm.

During the damage spree, the windows of a taxi were smashed and a car was also turned on to its side.

Sergeant Rob Simpson, who covers the Sedgley area, said: "The quick response of officers in the area meant we were able to arrest a lad nearby for the damage, and a second youth was also cautioned for possession of cannabis.

"We take such incidents very seriously and will be carrying out further inquiries in the area."

The 17-year-old, from Upper Gornal, remains in police custody and will be questioned by officers on suspicion of criminal damage.

Meanwhile, police in Rubery, North Worcestershire, also arrested a man after following footprints in the snow.

The man, in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of vehicle interference after a resident reported suspicious activity in Waseley Road at about 4.30am.

Following the arrest, Superintendent Kevin Purcell, of West Mercia Police, tweeted: "It's not all bad! Suspect arrested as a result of footprints in snow from scene of vehicle interference leading to him!!!.

"It is a good news story on a difficult day."
