Labour's Ian Austin And Conservative Greg Hands Start Ugly Fight On Twitter

'One Of The Most Unpleasant, Most Stupid Tory MPs'

As Labour and Conservative MPs chewed over the news that David Miliband is to leave politics to take up a new job with a charity in New York, most spent their evenings tweeting pleasant tributes to the popular MP.

But the social network was also the scene for an astonishing Twitter fight between a Labour and Conservative MP.

Labour MP Ian Austin

Dudley MP Ian Austin said it was "official Labour policy" that Greg Hands, Conservative MP for Chelsea & Fulham, was "the most unpleasant and one of the most stupid Tory MPs".

And the Tory shot back, accusing the Labour MP of celebrating too hard on the "last day of term".

Conservative MP Greg Hands

The quarrel began before the announcement of David Miliband's resignation, as Greg Hands tweeted about the resignation from the front bench of Ian Mearns MP, who resigned as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ivan Lewis, in order to defy the Labour whip and vote against the Jobseekers Bill which retroactively changed Department of Work and Pensions rules relating to mandatory unpaid labour schemes.

Several of their followers, including former Tory MP Louise Mensch expressed shock at the spat, but neither would back down.
