A campaigning 10-year-old has had her blog about sexism in her school go viral, after she complained about her girl classmates comparing their weights.

The anonymous youngster, who has accrued more than 100 Twitter followers in just a few hours, began the blog to tell "Tales of School Sexism from a 10 year old".

"This is one of my many blogs that I am going to do under this title," she wrote.

In her first piece on the site, retweeted by the likes of Times columnist Caitlin Moran and campaigners Everyday Sexism, the blogger wrote about children being made to weigh themselves at school, and the worrying reaction of her female friends compared to the boys in the class.

Children in her class had been sent a letter home informing parents they would be weighed and measured at school, she wrote, adding "my mum took one look at it and gave me the slip to take back because she said, if she thought that if I was underweight or overweight she would weigh me herself!"

When the teacher weighed the other children in the class, the anonymous pupil said she was "disgusted" by what happened next.

"When it was all over, I went over to my friends and they were all comparing their weights!

"I didn’t even know what it meant because they were weighed in Kg’s, so they were comparing things they didn’t know! But then I went over to the boys and they didn’t mention a word about it."

Girls were "competing with other girls, and they don’t even know it," she said, and "the boys get around it. No-one cared about how much they weighed.

"Why can’t we all be treated as equals? How do we sort this out?"

The blog has sparked a fierce debate on social media.

The blogger's keen-eyed mother however, has made sure her daughter is not exposed to some of the murkier side of Twitter.
